Asser Tarek and Andrea ready to eat Assers awesome cooking

Food

  • The best food we had by far was the home cooked food that Asser made while we were couchsurfing with Tarek and Asser.
  • Sahlab - A milk based warm drink with raisains, walnuts and cinnamon
  • Hibiscus - Karkadeh - A flower based red drink that is quite good. Its red in color and its bitter, but with enough sugar its good.
  • Baba Ganoogh (Andreas Favorite) which is made from cooked mashed egg plant and 'tahini', (sesame seed paste), garlic and lemon
  • Stuffed vine leaves
  • Koshari - This is an egyptian staple, its a lot like spaggheti but with lentils and fried onions.
  • Fuul,' brown broad beans, are a staple of the common Egyptian diet. They are slow cooked and often mashed with lemon, garlic and cumin.

Highlights

  • Couchsurfing in Cairo with Tarek, Asser, and Family
  • Horse back riding next to the pyramids at 1 am in the morning with a full moon
  • Abu Simbel - best Egyptian ruin we have seen
  • Diving and snorkeling in the red sea in Dahab
  • Listening to Live music at at Khan El-Khalili Spending a afternoon in the Sahara Desert

Worst Experiences

  • Seeing the country's pollution - When we were snorkeling in the red sea it was so crazy to see how much garbage is literally everywhere
  • Misguided attitudes toward western women

Reflections

  • Driving in Cairo is absolutely nuts. We could not believe how crazy it was there. There were $70,000 mercedes and horse buggies right next to each other crowding the streets. Everyone thought they owned the road. We would never ever rent a car in Cairo.
  • Gas is only 1 dollar a gallon.
  • We had to drive in police convoys a lot of the time while we were in Egypt, they said it was for safety reasons, but it seemed like we were targets going in such huge groups.
