Peru:
Time: July 30 – Sept. 1 (34 days)
Peru is the one country which initially topped our list. Our (really Andrea’s) aspiration was to visit the world famous Machu Picchu, an awe inspiring Inca city in the Andes. Our dreams were realized after booking a 4day/3night backpacking trip up the Inca trail. Daily allotted hikers are highly regulated by the government due damage caused as a result of its popularity. Although Machu Picchu put this country on the map for us, research into the country has highlighted numerous additional attractions. Peru is a country of many wonders for the naturist & and cultural enthusiast’s heart.
Cultural experiences to name of few include: in Lima – Peru’s capital (Museums, cathedrals, park centers), Lago (Lake) Titicaca- the world’s highest navigatable lake with man made floating islands (created from reeds) of which are still populated by various Islander groups, and cobbled stone Cuzco – once a main Inca city but now the main stop off point for tourists before visiting Machu Picchu.
Educational opportunities: practicing our Spanish, visiting museums to brush up on our history, and meeting up with locals for a “real” perspective of the country.
With our love of nature we will also be enjoying the vast array of outdoor pursuits; hiking/backpacking in Canon del Cotahuasi the world’s deepest canyon, sandboarding in Huacachina, visiting Islas Ballestas the deceivingly named “Poor man’s Galapagos”, and hopefully experience the Amazon in southern Peru’s biodiverse Manu region.
