We arrived at 7am in Arequipa. This enchanting town outlined by a snow covered volcano top and mountain peaks, has a flavor similar to that of our alma mater, Madison, WI. Also, adding character to the town are the stone streets. Catching up on sleep after an 11 hour overnight economical (meaning using local) bus ride, was our first priority.
Then we took a walk around the Moasterio de Santa Catalina, which is delightfully painted in bright Latin American colors. We have booked a 3 day trek through Canon del Colca with a local guide on a route we choose b-c it is off the main trekking trails. This is the second deepest canyon in the world (and more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon) at 3191m and we are very excited about getting to spend some time in God’s country.
