South Africa:
Time: Sept. 3 – 15 (13days)
When mentioning South Africa to those of us who have never been to the continent, the amazing city of Capetown, Cape of Good Hope (Africa’s southern most tip), safaris and the capitol Johannesburg are what come to mind. Dimming the picture, images of crime, poverty, and AIDs also appear. Our hope to is make sense of these contrasting images.
In South Africa we plan on stopping at touristy locations to start. Then off the regular tourist radar will be stops along the “Wild Coast” (rural western coast line roughly between Port Elizabeth and Durban). Anticipating having our own set of rental wheels, this will end up being a whirlwind tour.
List of main attractions: Capetown, Table MT, Stellenbosch (town in wine country), Hermanus(whale watching from shore), and the Garden Route (scenic drive along ocean coast).
Education intentions; gain a better understanding of the recent occurrence of apartheid, delve into the country’s history, and seek participation in/discussion about this vibrant, developing culture.
