South Africa Country Summary :

Foods that we associate with our visit:

  • Ostrich steak
  • Billatong (sort of like beef jerky)
  • Nandos, a restaurant with amazing spicy sauces for chicken (sort of like BW3's)
  • Rusks (kind of like biscotti, Andrea definitely made this into a daily dietary supplement as it went great with morning coffee)
  • Calamari and fish n' chips (or fries for those you don't know what chips are)
  • Wines of Stellenbosch (sampling so many fine wines at once we have become something near wine snobs)

Highlights (although limited to 3 this was a VERY difficult decision):

  • Couch surfing with Pravayna and Kapil (and easy first choice of highlights)
  • Kayaking with whales and spotting whales from the shores of Hermanus
  • Whiteshark diving (Mike insisted on this, although not as much so for Andrea)
  • Andrea's other top 3 was first driving into Capetown from the airport and seeing Table Mountain

Worst Experiences:

  • Not knowing how to get car into reverse when attempting to exit parking spot
  • Transitioning to the fact that everything closes by 5pm

Realizations and Observations:

  • Rugby is way better than American football (especially when watching it with South African fans)
  • Crime may happen to almost everyone at some point in South Africa but they do not allow this to interfer with an overall postive psyche, while Americans seem to have better personal safety but also more vigilance and fear.
  • South Africa is a Westernized country (felt like home to us) with a definite European flare, but beware that a paved highway can turn into a dirt road with little to no warning.
  • This is one African country that is very easy to travel to and in, one that we would highly recommend anyone to visit because of this ease but also due to the country's amazing wealth of beauty and opportunity to view African wildlife.
