Zambia Country Summary:

Foods Associated with our time there:

  • Nsyma, sort of like a ball of corn meal with playdough consistency which is to manually envelop the meat and veggies that are served on the side. Pretty much everyone in Zambia eats this at least once a day.
  • Mosi, the local beer that is offered as one of the few refreshment alternatives to water during our safari
  • English breakfast, sounds funny but the camp we stayed at served the best English breakfasts (toast with fried eggs, sausage and or bacon, beans, fried tomatoes, and coffee) a complete artery clogger

Most Amazing Experiences:

  • Looking over Victoria Falls from the point of Devils Pool
  • Tenting on tree platform at Flatdogs (African Wildlife both inside and outside of the National Parks was amazing and memorable)
  • 3 hours we spent hitchhiking with Josh and Anna on the back of Quads (4 wheelers)

Worst Experiences:

  • Tenting in hot conditions
  • Andrea found the worst squatter yet, a dirt mound with a hole in middle covered by a shack.

Realizations:

  • It is not just National geographic photographers capturing remote village people, many Zambians really do live in huts made of mud or reeds and cook over open fires.
  • Wild African animals are not threatened or agitated by the presence of a vehicle as they do not know how to interpret it (they see the vehicle as a body with numerous heads popping up). However, this changes if a ignorant tourist decides to stand up for a better picture. The animal than recognizes the human outline and as a tendency to become more threatening, as in case of predatory animals like lions.
  • Zambians still relate who they are to the tribe that they are from and not to their city of birth. This also means that people speak their tribal language, but also have a tendency to be able to speak other similar tribal languages in addition to English. Many people spoke a minimum of 4 languages which made us feel REALLY ignorant despite all our years of university.
